Best Mid Range Action Cam? | AKASO V50 Pro Review

Today, we’re going to be looking at AKASO’s best selling action cam, the V50 Pro.

Akaso has been known for its ability to make cheap yet solid products, which not only includes action cams but many other electronics such as fitness trackers, sunglasses & security cameras.

I’m not sure what to expect as believe it or not, this is my first time reviewing an action cam from AKASO!

So is this AKASO action cam really as good as they say? Or is it just another overrated brand?

Without further ado, let’s go right into it!

Design & Looks

v50 pro design

The V50 Pro feels pretty robust, grippy with the rubber finishing.

It also has an ultra-compact body, which makes it convenient especially if you’re into travelling or going on adventures or even holiday trips.

And if you’re wondering to what extent, it can easily fit into any of your pockets!

Mini-USB

Movo GM100 Lavalier Microphone for GoPro with GoPro Mic Adapter Compatible with GoPro HERO3, HERO3+ and HERO4 Black, White and Silver Editions

Another thing to note is the use of a mini-USB port instead of the traditional micro-USB port (phones, chargers utilise this)

This is a double-edged sword as using mini-USB would be more reliable also has an external microphone.

But at the same time, it is much less common so you can’t share the same cable as many of your other electronics which utilise the more familiar micro-USB port.

Display

Navigating around the camera, there’s almost no dynamic animation which I feel makes it not as enjoyable as it could be.

But that having said, it does indeed feel very responsive and reliable with little to no lag.

v50 pro interace

White: On; Black: Off is quite unintuitive.

Some were quite ambiguous such as the quick menu shortcut window, where white and black meant on and off.

What It Comes With

Credits to tech4all

It comes with tons of accessories, from mounting it onto bicycle handlebar, tripod stands.

It also comes with a waterproof casing which is nice not only for water sports but when it rains!

Remote Control Wristband

Light Indicator: Solid -> Connected; Blinking: Not Connected

AKASO was also nice enough to provide an RC wrist band, which comes handy if you’re mounting it onto your bike or helmet, where it isn’t entirely very convenient to have to start and stop the camera manually.

I find the buttons really hard to press which is a good thing since it won’t be accidentally activated, which would be a shame if you were to lose your once in a lifetime shot just because of this kind of accident.

The light indicator also tells you whether or not it’s connected to the camera, so you can be sure it’s ready when you need it.

What about the effective distance?

v50 pro wristband effective range

It’s definitely far enough for all kind of selfies or wefies you’re ever gonna take.

Further to that, within the effective range, I can confidently say its works 100% of the time which is honestly surprising.

A quick tip: Switch on the beep sound from the quick menu so you’ll know whether you’ve taken your photo/started your video.

Extra Batteries + Dual Charger

The battery that V50 Pro feed on isn’t something that can be brought conveniently (I’ve tried to find it everywhere but to no avail).

But on the bright side, AKASO was generous enough to include a multi-battery charger and an additional battery.

And if you were wondering how long it lasts, it’s about 90 mins of continuous shooting which translates to about half a day of shooting + standby use.

So unless you’re constantly keeping the camera recording (which I don’t recommend), 2 batteries should keep you running for at least a day with no problem.

Image Quality

Click For Full Image (14MP)

Let’s start off by clearing some of the ‘false info’ provided by AKASO.

There’s a bit of dishonesty here by AKASO in terms of photo specs.

That’s because they claim to be able to shoot 20MP but in fact, the image sensor powering it is only able to support 14MP, thus anything higher is just interpolation at play.

But regardless, 14MP is way more than enough for 99% of the displays out there.

Video Quality

Unusable 1080p

Oh, another thing about video quality.

The 4K and 2.7K res shots are sharp and clear but once it comes to the 1080p 60fps, it gets quite bad to the point that it starts reminding me of “ancient” cameras.

Here’s a sample snapshot of these resolutions.

v50 pro resolution side by side 4K 2.7K and 1080p FHD
Click here for 4K / 2.7K / 1080p full-size snapshot, the difference is much more profound.

Thus using 1080p is pretty much obsolete, which in other words means you are stuck with 30fps or 720p 120fps.

Adjustable Angle (FOV)

v50 pro field of view

I was actually quite surprised when I saw this as this is usually a feature only seen at top flagship cameras like the GoPro, Yi or Sony.

It comes really handy as different kind of shots looks nice with different FOV.

For example, if you’re using it for sports, such as mountain biking or snowboarding, you’d want a wider field of view to create a more immersive and fun experience.

On the other hand, if you’re vlogging or using it on a vacation, you can easily use the medium or narrow field of view to create a more focused shot!

It goes all the way from super-wide → wide → medium → narrow.

But if you want a simple & general option, just stick with medium, it has a nice balance of wideness and narrowness.

Customisation Options AKA Settings

It has a total of 4 different types of settings.

I won’t bore you with every exact option (the manual goes through it really well) but here is a simple overview of what each one can do.

Photo – Long Exposure/Burst/Timer…

Video – Slow Motion/Timelapse/Stabilization/Video Codec

General – WiFi, Beep Sounds…

Effect – Filter/White Balance/Exposure…

I felt the effect settings to be a little extra as it pretty much achieves what your phone’s normal gallery editing can.

Smartphone App (iSmartPro+)

explorer 3 smartphone app different modes and screen

After connecting wirelessly to the app via Wifi, you’ll be able to remotely control the camera, which has roughly the same range as the remote control.

TELESIN 35.5' Selfie Stick Monopod for GoPro, Selfie Pole with Strong Tripod Mount Adapter, Cellphone and Digital Compacts for Hero 8 7 6 5 4 3, AKASO, Campark, APEMAN, DJI OSMO Action Cameras

Also, if you’re planning on going on trips, taking wefies or simply enjoy capturing shots with unique point of view, getting a phone mount with a monopod would be perfect!

Quick Comparison

At this price point, I think that there’s a huge variety of these tiny cams that you can use.

The V50 Pro is already very good value for money (all in 1 package, accessories – waterproof case included, good quality, etc).

But if you want more options to consider, here’s 2 others I’d think are as good as the V50 Pro.

Verdict: Great Looking Shots But Lacking User-friendliness

v50 pro front body

Too long didn’t read?

Well, here’s a whole summary for you to decide if it’s for you.

The V50 Pro is a well-built solid mid-range action camera.

The software is stable; shot quality is definitely better than average; accessories provided are plentiful and complete.

And despite a major downside being the lack of user-friendly UI, the shot quality and many other factors surpass most cameras at this calliper.

So if you’re looking for a waterproof, portable and durable alternative to your phone, that shoots stabilized and sharp video, I’d surely recommend this.

A complete package that comes with everything you’ll need so you don’t have to get anything else separately is also an added plus that most companies don’t provide.
